A quick introduction to windsock size regulations.
- FAA Size 1 is a windsock of 2,5m (8ft) x 0,45m (18 inches).
- FAA Size 2 is a windsock of 3,6m (12ft) x 0,9m (36 inches).
A quick introduction to windsock installation regulations.
- FAA type L806 frangible is an installation with a maximum height of 3m (10ft).
- FAA type L807 rigid is an installation with a maximum height of 4,8m (16ft).
There are three basic categories that need windsocks.
Larger Airports
This means large airports and licensed aerodromes. They must have at least a windsock that fits ICAO annex 14 or FAA AC150 53 27 regulations. That means a windsock of 360cm (12ft) in length on a mast that is 480cm (16 ft).
Smaller Applications
With this we mean; unlicensed aerodromes, private landing strips, smaller airports, parachute & paragliding centers, composting sites, helicopter landing sites, and highways. There are not always specific regulations surrounding the windsock size. If the case is that your company does not have regulations for it we would recommend a windsock of between 60 cm (2 ft) x 240cm (8 ft) in length. This windsock then placed on a mast of minimum 3m (10ft).
Industrial applications
A few examples of industrial applications are; oil and gas rigs and refineries, power stations, chemical storage facilities, water utilities, and sewage sites. Just like the smaller applications above industrial windsocks do not have regulations. But a windsock needs to be on site. So we once again recommend a windsock of between 60 cm (2 ft) x 240cm (8 ft) in length. Placed on a mast of a minimum 3m (10ft).
Offshore helidecks
This means helidecks on ships or drilling platforms. They must have at least a windsock that fits the requirements of ICAO 30cm (1ft) x 120cm (4ft) in length. This windsock can be placed on a mast of any size.
